Nuisance Trapping Easier with the Right Trap

“Pick the Right Tool for the Job”

Isn’t this truly one of the wisest sayings ever uttered?

Just think of all the frustration, lost time, and unintended consequences we’ve all been apart of trying to do a job without having just the right tool.

Acquiring the “right tool” is the reason why many of us love our father’s workshops and garages, have pangs of jealousy watching This Old House, and always smile upon seeing a Hartville Hardware gift card tucked into a Father’s Day Card.

In the world of nuisance animal removal, just as in plumbing or auto repair, having the “right tool” often means the difference between frustration and efficient success.

Best Traps Not Commonly Found

For many homeowners attempting to deal with a nuisance animal problem, one of the problems commonly faced is the availability and access to quality animal removal tools.

Lowe’s, Home Depot, Ace Hardware, Tractor Supply and Wal Mart typically don’t have much variety when it comes to animal traps.  You’ll typically only find cage traps in a couple of sizes, with Havahart being the dominant brand.

These common traps are a good start and will definitely catch raccoons, squirrels, groundhogs, etc.  Please note, we are not berating them in any way.

But, the common cage trap is really only the starting point in the nuisance trapping world. Many times they just don’t address some common trapping needs.  Believe us, there are many more tools and brands out there.  However, since the overall demand for specialty traps is not that high, they are only sold by specialty retailers.

Example #1

Groundhogs/Woodchucks are a common nuisance species here in Northeast Ohio.

Some groundhogs are extremely easy to catch with a baited, cage style trap most prevavlent in stores.  In fact, many do-it-yourselfers have had success in this way.

But, groundhogs learn quickly and there are an equal number of groundhogs who snub their noses at such offerings.

So how do you catch a groundhog that won’t “take the bait”?  By choosing a different style of trap and trapping method.woodchuch trapped canton OH

Here is a picture of a recently caught groundhog trapped without bait in a not-sold-in-stores trap.  The trap works because the groundhog wants to get into or out of the den entrance which is at the base of the brick.

The trap and trap extension block the hole and force the animal through the triggering mechanism.  If the groundhog is using this den, this is a highly efficient trap and method.

This trap is sold by a specialty retailer online and, until recently, was hand built by the designer.

Example # 2

Squirrels are another common species of nuisance animals here in Northeast Ohio.  They often chew their way into homes and makes nests in attics and walls.

Trapping them with the easily found box style traps and some peanut butter can surely be done.  But, often, to truly solve the issue of squirrels living in the house, the trapper must go to the den entrance with a not typically found style of trap.squirrel hole in peak

Take a look at this squirrel entrance.

If this were your home, do you believe it would be effective and efficient to put a peanut butter-baited, standard cage trap at the base of the nearest tree to catch the squirrels living in your attic?fox squirrels one way door trap

To solve the squirrel issue, a one way door trap is mounted by this entrance.  Exiting squirrels are captured and assurances that the offenders have been removed is assured in a timely fashion.

Capturing squirrels in this fashion is the best way to proceed: but, as you can see, having the “right tool” is critical to trapping success!

Where to Find Specialty Traps

To find just the right tool for your particular animal removal job, you have two options:

1.  Search the Internet well.

Don’t just google “squirrel trap” and expect to find the good stuff on front page results.  Instead, try searches like “custom groundhog trap” or “wildlife+animal+control+supplies” to find the online retailers who have the more specialized traps.

2.  Call a Professional Nuisance Trapper in your area.

The pros always have the best tools.  Why not hire a professional trapper to get the job done efficiently?

A pro will come with a variety of traps and figure out which applications will work best.
