At Frontline Animal Removal, we always tell customers that patience is one of the hardest parts of squirrel trapping. Most squirrel removal jobs take time, careful observation, and multiple days of monitoring traps.
Every once in a while, though, everything lines up just right—and when it does, it makes for a memorable (and fun) job.
In this week’s nuisance wildlife story Ryan is on a squirrel removal call in Northeast Ohio, serving our local service area around Canton, Akron, and Kent, when something highly unusual happens: a squirrel is captured within 30 seconds of setting the trap.
That kind of result is somewhat rare in wildlife control, but it perfectly illustrates why proper inspection, correct trap placement, and experience matter so much in squirrel removal.
Spotting the Problem Right Away
As soon as Ryan pulls into the driveway, the problem area is obvious. Looking up at the home, he immediately sees a hole chewed through the fascia near the roofline—a classic squirrel entry point. Even better (or worse, depending on perspective), the squirrel itself is sitting right there, looking out of the hole.
This kind of visibility doesn’t happen often, but it reinforces one of the most important principles of squirrel trapping:
You have to find the entry point before you can solve the problem.
Squirrels commonly enter homes through fascia boards, roof edges, gable vents, and other vulnerable exterior areas. In this case, the squirrel has clearly established the fascia as its access point into the attic.
Trap Placement: Why Location Matters
Ryan quickly sets up a ladder, grabs a trap, and moves fast. As he begins working near the hole, the squirrel starts to poke its head out again. To prevent the animal from retreating further inside, Ryan temporarily blocks the opening and sets the trap directly over the entrance.
This step highlights one of our core squirrel removal strategies:
1. Find the Entrance
You must identify exactly where squirrels are getting into the structure. Guessing leads to wasted time and missed captures.
2. Set Traps Over Active Openings
When possible, traps are placed directly over the hole. This forces squirrels to pass through the trap when they exit, dramatically increasing success.
3. Set Additional Traps Outside
Even when a squirrel is caught quickly, exterior traps are still set nearby to catch any additional squirrels that may be outside the home or using the same access point.
Ryan fully expects the squirrel to stay inside the attic for a while and “think about its next move,” which is what usually happens. But this time, the squirrel has other plans.
A Rare 30-Second Capture
After setting the trap, Ryan climbs down to grab additional equipment. Before he even reaches the bottom of the ladder, he watches the squirrel exit the hole and walk straight into the trap—right in front of him.
That kind of real-time capture almost never happens in wildlife removal. Even with trail cameras, most technicians only see animals after the fact. Watching a squirrel go into the trap live is both unusual and extremely satisfying. Take a look:
Ryan jokes that it might be a “go buy a lottery ticket” kind of day—and he’s not wrong. That Powerball ticket was sold in Arkansas.

This job isn’t about luck. It’s about:
- Recognizing squirrel behavior
- Identifying active entry points
- Moving efficiently and safely on ladders and roofs
- Knowing exactly where and how to place traps
Even when a capture happens quickly, the job isn’t over. The squirrel is transferred properly, additional traps are set, and the structure will still need repairs and exclusion work to prevent future problems.
