Solution for Skunks
There are many skunks roaming the Stark, Summit, and Portage County area. But, many of these roaming skunks aren’t what we’d call true nuisance animals.
Sure, it is a nuisance when we smell their spray around our homes. And it’s an especially bad day if our pets get the business end of a skunk. And, as we wrote about recently, this is the time of year when skunks are most evident.
Yet, unless a skunk is living in the immediate vicinity of your home, we don’t really consider the skunk a nuisance animal for which we can provide a solution.
The key here is providing a solution. If we are able to remove a skunk that is using your property daily because of a den and we are able to make that area no longer accessible; that is true solution.
Trapping random, wandering skunks is possible, but it is expensive and ineffective in providing a skunk-free area around a home.
Today’s post is a good example of a nuisance skunk situation for which we are able to provide a true solution.
Skunk Living Under Foundation
The problem at a recent skunk job was that a skunk had taken up residence under an apartment building and its way in and out was under the porch you see here.
The skunk was coming and going often. There was a great food source (bird feeder) nearby and, looking under the porch, one could see a large gap under the foundation that provided a protected denning area.
Because of these circumstances, this is the sort of skunk job where a solvable issue exists.
It is solvable because:
- We can target a specific skunk that is high risk because its den is under a structure.
- The skunk is removed quickly because it is actively using the den.
- The den area can be modified to make sure no future skunks (or groundhogs or opossums) take up residence.
Removing this skunk and performing a good exclusion of the area will result in no skunks living there in the future.
Video | Skunk Removal & Exclusion Job
The following video shows what Ryan found at this job and how we solved the problem. Though obviously specific to this scenario, the video shows the basics of a solution for skunks: remove the offender at the den entrance and make sure no other animals can use the space.
The foundation issues and the proximity of the bird feeder undoubtedly played a part in this skunk choosing this spot. Dealing with food and access issues prior to animals moving in is always best practice.
The best prevention step for foundations, porches, and decks that attract burrowing animals is the installation of a wire barrier in problem spots. Wire exclusion is guaranteed effective!
