Catching Groundhogs with Bait

In our blog posts and pages on groundhog removal, we’ve very often stated that the best way to trap groundhogs is without bait.

In fact, last week’s blog was a reiteration of our advice with some video added.  In case you missed it, check it out here.

Sometimes, however, bait trapping groundhogs is necessary!

Aslo, we know that a lot of do it yourselfers may not have the double door traps we prefer as the big box stores don’t sell them.

So, if you’re using bait and a run-of-the-mill box trap, you’ll find this post useful.

Best Groundhog Bait

You sure don’t have to fight with groundhogs to get them to eat their fruits and vegetables!

They can be tempted by a lot of items.

But, when we need to use bait to lure to trap a groundhog, we like cantaloupe and strawberries.

These ripe, bright, good smelling fruits to help us get the job done.

We have had good success with them.

It is important to still try to get the traps in highly traveled areas.  And, it might take a little longer to attract the attention of the groundhogs.

But, if they see and smell a well baited trap and don’t have any previous history with a live trap, they’ll probably be caught.

We got a recent comment on YouTube saying that a green bean trail and a cabbage half smeared with a sweet paste work well too.  It just goes to show you that a combination of fruits and vegetables often will do the trick.

Here is Ryan discussing a recent job where a baited trap was the most practical way to go for the groundhogs in this yard.

Groundhog Trapping Pros | Akron, Canton, Kent

Successful groundhog trapping is usually all about putting the right trap in the right spot.

But, if you can’t get to the premium spot- a groundhog den entrance-then you may need to lure them with bait.

Bait trapping is not as efficient or fool proof but can still get the desired results.

We encourage you to give it a try yourself or call a professional nuisance wild animal control operator in your area if you need help.

If you are trying to catch groundhogs, the only other tip we really recommend is covering the trap with cardboard or a towel.  That way if you catch a skunk, it’ll be a lot easier to deal with.
