Cellular Game Camera for Raccoon Removal
For almost as long as cameras have been around, inventive sorts have been rigging them to take pictures of wildlife without a human photographer being present. This allows the pictures to be taken on the animal’s time, as it may be long intervals between visits of a particular place or in the middle of the night.
As triggering technology developed and cameras became smaller, trail cameras began to be mass produced and sold to wildlife enthusiasts looking to photograph animals.
When cameras moved from film to digital, the use of trail cameras exploded as the mechanics of picture retrieval and storage became exponentially easier.
Over the last twenty years technological advancement has delivered higher resolution pictures, video, and a lot more stealth. But perhaps the real “game changer” with trail cameras is their pairing with cellular technology.
With cellular technology, a trail camera can be placed in a remote location (as long as it has cell service) and send the pictures or video it takes back to the user (or the cloud). The game camera user doesn’t even have to go back to the camera’s location to retrieve data! And, the user can get an idea of what is going on at their camera’s location in real-time. Pretty cool indeed.
For a nuisance wildlife removal company, this technology has obvious applications.
In this post, we explain and share video of the advantages of using cellular game camera technology.
Advantage of a Cellular Trail Camera
Ohio nuisance trapping regulations (with only a few exceptions) require a trap to be checked, at a minimum, once a day. This rule makes sense as leaving animals in traps for long periods of time is not ideal for a number of reasons, including animal welfare.
Therefore, whether the job is 10 minutes down the road or a 45 minute drive away, the trapper has a duty to check the traps daily in some way.
Trap checking (driving from job to job) can consume a significant portion of a nuisance animal trapper’s day. And, as you can imagine, driving 45 minutes to a job and then pulling off the big ladder to check a trap high on a home’s peak only to find it empty can be frustrating. It is also not the most efficient use of a workday. The goal is to always be as efficient as possible.
A situation like this is where a tool like the cellular game camera shines.
Instead of driving and then climbing up to the job, the need to go or not go has already been determined because of what the camera has shown. If there is an animal, the camera shows it!
It is great that the Ohio nuisance animal removal rules allow trap notification technology like cellular game cameras to meet the trap checking requirement.
Here is the pertinent section of the Ohio rule 1501:31-15-03 :
(C) Monitoring traps, snares or other devices
(1) Traps, snares or any other devices used to take or capture nuisance wild animals may be monitored with an operational electronic device or by personal observation by the person setting the trap or a designated agent. It shall be unlawful for any person to fail to monitor traps, snares or any other device used to take or capture nuisance wild animals, and remove all animals from their traps, snares or other devices once every calendar day, except:

When it comes to trap checking, cellular game cameras take all the surprise out of trap checking- and that is a good thing.
Here is a video in which Ryan describes the tool and its advantages.
Ryan knew the raccoon was already in the trap before he went to that job and put the ladder up. Knowledge like that is extremely useful.
Disadvantages of a Cellular Game Camera
Like a lot of new technology, the main disadvantage of this technology is cost.
Along with the purchase of the camera, a data package must be purchased so it works properly. The plans for these cameras are very similar to phone plans with monthly or yearly fees and data charges. Additionally, the camera manufacturers have arrangements with the larger cell service providers, but not every camera works on every network.
With the added costs, a lot of variables need to be considered in determining where, when, and how cellular trail cameras are deployed.
Additionally, as with any cell phone, damage and theft are issues that must be considered.
