A New Year Without Nuisance Animals
Happy New Year to All!
If you’ve had an ongoing problem with squirrels, raccoons, bats or groundhogs and have resolved that 2023 is the year you’ll make your home nuisance-animal-free, good for you!
This first post of the year is dedicated to all the homeowners in the Akron / Canton / Kent Area who have had lived with nuisance animal problems for a while (many people do, you are not alone) and for one reason or another have decided to do something about it.
Getting Ready to Buy or Sell a Home?
Would you buy or sell a home that had evidence of squirrels like this?
Probably not. That’s why many a squirrel-free New Year’s resolution is prompted by the desire to buy or sell a home.
After the Holidays are over and the real estate season kicks into high gear, it is common to field calls from property managers, buyers, sellers, and real estate agents about squirrels.
If you are selling a home and know you have an animal issue, it is highly advisable to get rid of this problem before the first open house. Curb appeal is easily overcome with the sound of a squirrel scurrying around the attic.
Unfortunately, we’ve worked with some new home buyers who’ve recently purchased homes with animal problems. Remember, once the home has closed most issues with a home become those of the new owner.
We strongly recommend that you work closely with your home inspector and real estate agent to assure that there are no animal issues (or any animal issues for that matter). People ask about radon, lead, the wiring, water leaks, etc. Why not ask about evidence of squirrels, bats, or raccoons?
Enough is Enough?
Squirrels and raccoons are active in winter and we spend a lot more time in our homes.
Because of these circumstances, some animal problems that we’ve been able to ignore for a while really start to wear on us.
Some of the best examples of this are clients who’ve had squirrels living in soffits and other outside voids. Because the squirrels weren’t actually in the walls or attic yet, these clients gave the squirrels a free pass for quite a while. But, as they are awoken on a regular basis by squirrels instead of their alarm clocks, the tolerance for the squirrels ends.
Other squirrel removal resolutions are uttered because of the habits of the little understood flying squirrel. These nocturnal animals are usually more problematic for homeowners in the winter because they congregate communally for warmth. One flying squirrel, because they are so small, usually goes undetected. Many flying squirrels, active at night, definitely disturbs those long winter naps and gets homeowner’s ire up.
