Raccoons Through the Gable Vent

Your home is your sanctuary, a place where you should feel safe and secure.

However, unwanted guests like raccoons can quickly turn your peaceful abode into a source of worry. These clever creatures often find their way into your attic through vulnerable entry points, such as gable vents.

In this blog post, we’ll share the story of a homeowner who faced a raccoon invasion and the crucial steps we took to resolve the issue. Learn how nuisance animal removal professionals can help you safeguard your home by removing old, unneeded gable vents and replacing them with aluminum-covered wood.

We have a very descriptive video as a part of this post you may wish to scroll down to right away.

The Raccoon Intrusion

Our story begins with a homeowner who noticed strange noises coming from their attic. After an  inspection, it became clear that raccoons were going in and out of the attic through a gable vent.

Just as a way of review, a gable is the flat side of building where the two sides of the roof meet to form the peak.

In our older housing stock, many gables had vents installed in them to let air go in and out of the attic.  A gable vent from an old squirrel job is pictured here.

Gable vents are very common in our many of the houses here in the Akron, Canton, Kent area built prior to the ridge vent’s widespread use starting in the 1970s.  See Ridge Vents and Older Homes.  But, all of these older houses have been re-roofed since the early 70s.  And when the re-roofs happened, many roofers installed ridge vents.  Still, many gable vents remain.

As a result of the aging gable vents left in place, many nuisance animals get into attics by going through gable vents.

For the home with attic noise, the animal that was using the gable vent was a raccoon.  We were called to provide a solution of removal and repair.  And, that’s just what we did.

Removal & Prevention of Raccoons | Akron, Canton, Kent

The homeowner decided it was time to take action and contacted Frontline Animal Removal. Ryan quickly assessed the situation and devised a plan to resolve the raccoon infestation.

  1. Raccoon Removal: The first step was to safely and humanely remove the raccoons from the attic. This required the use of specialized traps and techniques to ensure that no raccoons were left behind.
  2. Repairs and Cleanup: After removing the raccoons, we assessed the damage they had caused. It is important to look at all damaged areas as new raccoons always seem to find these.
  3. Replacing Gable Vents: Since the gable vent was no longer necessary, and the house had been upgraded with ridge venting, we recommended replacing the old gable vent with a more secure solution. We installed aluminum-covered wood where the vent used to be that not only provided better protection but also added to the aesthetic appeal of the home.(See video below)
  4. Vent Screening:  If the vent is still a featured part of the roof-ventilation system it can be screened with high-quality materials.  See this post for more details.
