Attic Vent Squirrels

Squirrels love attic vents.  Why?  Because once a squirrel gets past the defenses of a particular vent, a whole attic of security and shelter await.

squirrel holeConsequently, attic vents are always on the list of areas to check when customers report noises of squirrels in their attics or walls.

To the right is a plastic gable vent Ryan recently found that had a very nice hole chewed right through it.

Some time this late summer, a mother squirrel found this attic vent and attic space behind it.  She decided it made a great place for a den and she chewed right in.

Once the young squirrels started to make a racket running all over the place, the squirrel problem became noisily obvious.

Removing Squirrels from Attic

When finding a squirrel problem like this the basic steps for a squirrel solution are:

  • Make sure all entrances/exits have been located
  • Trap the squirrels
  • Make necessary repairs

When Ryan arrived to this job, he found the obvious hole in the gable vent but found no others.  That’s the best case scenario because it makes trapping and repair easier.  If there were multiple ways of getting in and out of the attic, they would all need to be accounted for in order to make the trapping successful.

Then he set an array of traps to catch squirrels in the attic and those looking to come back in.  Take a look at how he accomplishes this by watching this video.

Squirrel Removal & Repair Process

As you saw in the video, the young squirrels were in the attic when Ryan set the traps and the mother squirrel was out foraging.  The young ones were captured as they exited the attic being funneled through the one-way door trap.  She was captured in one of the baited live traps set up in the paths of travel.

This process is fairly typical for squirrel removal.

In fact, last week’s blog was all about the squirrel removal process as well.  If you missed it, please check it out as it is a little more in depth than this post.  Click anywhere here.

After the squirrel removal, vent replacement is necessary so no other animals seize an easy opportunity to move in.  Animal removal and repair go hand in hand.

As Ryan showed, because of its age and exposure to years of sunshine and weather, the vent the squirrel chewed through is brittle and needs replaced anyway.

Ryan is very familiar with brittle gable vents as he sees them all the time, including at his own house earlier this year.  He made this video and discusses vent problems.  He was replacing his as a prevention method.

Vent replacement is something Frontline Animal Removal and a lot of full service nuisance animal removal companies do, since we’re already on the job.

At the minimum, an animal removal company should offer a temporary patch even if they are not the ones who will make the permanent vent replacement.
