More Baby Squirrels Born

It’s that time of year…again!  The time for baby squirrels to be born.

Most of the species Frontline Animal Removal deals with only give birth to one litter per year.

In contrast, squirrels have two litters per year.  And, the second litters have very recently arrived (or will arrive soon).

The arrival of baby squirrels coincides with calls for squirrel removal in the Akron/Canton/Kent areas as clients notice  squirrels that have made entrance into homes recently; most with the intent of finding a nice nesting spot.

Baby Squirrels Removed

Locating a female squirrel in the home, the possibility of baby squirrels must be taken into account.

For Ryan, that means an examination of the nest in the video that follows.  Take a look as Ryan examines the nest and finds it has three small squirrels.

"Pinkies" Undeveloped baby squirrelsAs you can see from the picture to the right, at this early stage these squirrels are still developing.  They are born hairless and with their eyes closed.  Because they lack hair, they are often referred to as “pinkies” by operators in the nuisance animal control business.  Ryan uses this jargon in the video.

The Ohio Division of Wildlife’s publication “Life History Notes / Gray Squirrel” points out that it takes 5 weeks for the squirrels to open their eyes and 10 weeks until they venture out of the nest.

When the babies start leaving the nest in September and October, they are a lot more noticeable to homeowners than they are right now because of an increase in noise.

Noises in ceilings, attics, and walls are heard as the litter mates interact with each other and wait for mom to return with food.

Right now, though, female squirrels that are due to give birth or have given birth are not very noticeable at all unless you are a close observer.

At this time of year captured squirrels should be checked to see if they are male or female.  Any females should be checked to see if they are pregnant or lactating.  This knowledge gives the squirrel remover an idea of how to best proceed.

Squirrel Born in Trap

While it is typical to expect baby squirrels in their nests like in the video above, Ryan recently found a baby squirrel that was born in the cage used to trap the mother squirrel.  You can see this in the video below.

Ryan set up the squirrel job and promptly caught the squirrel coming out of the house. Not being able to get back inside to its nest, it gave birth in the cage trap.

This was the first time we’ve ever had a squirrel born in a trap.  For us, it underscores the point that the second round of squirrel births this year is happening right now.
