Round 2 for Ohio Baby Squirrels
They’re back.
Baby squirrels that is.
This one was part of a removal last week and is a good indicator of the development of summer born baby squirrels here in the Akron/Canton/Kent area in late August/ early September.
Squirrels Are Born Twice A Year
For some great information about Ohio’s gray squirrels, we recommend the Ohio Division of Wildlife’s publication “Life History Notes / Gray Squirrel”.
We refer to this publication in pointing out some facts on Ohio’s squirrels:
- Breeding takes place twice a year (December/January and May/June)
- Birth takes place twice a year (February/March and July/August)
- Newly born squirrels don’t open their eyes for the first 36 days (5 weeks)
- It takes 7 weeks until they sample solid food
- It take 10 weeks before they venture out of the nest
What is the age of this one?
We know it is in that first five week period as its eyes are not open. It does, however, have its fur. Just born squirrels are hairless so that their pink skin is exposed.
This one is still nursing and hadn’t been out of the nest or doing much at all except developing.
Because the little ones are not out and about yet creating a lot of noise, many people probably won’t realize a litter of squirrels has been born in their attic until later in September.
But, if you do notice a lone squirrel coming in and out of your house right now, chances are there is a litter of squirrels tucked in the house somewhere as well.
Dealing with Nuisance Squirrels
If you’ve found squirrels to be an issue and want professional help, contact Frontline Animal Removal in the Akron / Canton /Kent, OH area or locate a squirrel removal professional in your area.
You’ll want to find a company that will remove the offending squirrels and make a stout repair.
Remember, a squirrel chooses a particular home because
- there was easy opportunity because of a maintenance issue like the picture to the left shows
- or, a lack of natural den sites gave them little choice except to make their way in, often through chewing
Removing the offenders betters the odds of recurrence and a solid repair keeps others from filling the void.
