More Animals = More Problems
Despite what the thermometer has been saying, Spring is upon us.
And, in the world of nuisance animal removal that means an increase in the number of nuisance squirrels and raccoons out there.
Here in the Akron, Canton, Kent area of northeast Ohio, the first round of squirrel births is just coming to a close with many February and March births. (Remember, a second round comes in July/August).
So right now, there are lots of undeveloped squirrels tucked away in nests all over Summit, Stark, and Portage counties.
Since these little squirrels are not out of the nest yet, they are still unnoticed.
Here is a picture of an undeveloped Flying squirrel born in February which Ryan has been able to keep an eye on.
The squirrels born in the last two months are all in different stages of development with some farther along than others.
Still, it is safe to say that none of these newly born squirrels has ventured out of the nest quite yet: biologists tell us it takes about 10 weeks before they do that.
Baby raccoons also haven’t been noticed yet, but that is because they haven’t been born.
But, with April almost a week old, the first baby raccoons of the season are expected soon.
**** In fact, just after publishing this post Ryan reported the first babies were indeed removed. Here’s a look:
Once the birthing season starts it continue into June.
Baby Squirrels and Raccoons Get Noticed
Baby squirrels and raccoons develop quickly. And once they do, homeowners take notice.
In fact, once the babies of this Spring start to make noises and move all around, their presence is hard to ignore.
If you have noticed what you believe are the sounds of baby raccoons or squirrels, it is time to make a plan. More animals living in your attic or soffit only means more problems.
For us, the solution to making your home animal-free again is two-fold:
- Get the squirrels or raccoons out – mom and babies.
- Make a repair so that no squirrels, raccoons other animals are able to move into the damaged opening of the house.
Removal needs to be timed so that babies aren’t left inside, especially if they are not accessible.
Sometimes, it is best to let them alone until they are old enough to come out on their own. And remember, this won’t take months-only weeks.
Then, quality repair for the damaged area is the priority.
This spot at the right, for example, will only invite more animals if a repair isn’t made after the raccoons using it are removed.
A full service nuisance animal removal company like Frontline Animal Removal makes guaranteed, professional repairs. Choosing an animal control company that does removal AND repairs minimizes some of the hassle that nuisance squirrels and raccoons bring.
