Baby Squirrels More Active

As we transition from April into May, young squirrels are starting to make their presence known.  At this time, there is usually an increase in the number of calls for squirrel removal in the Akron, Canton, Kent, OH area.

This is because those Ohio squirrels that were born in February and March are starting to hit the 8-10 week developmental stage where they really begin to look and act like squirrels.  They become more active: making noise, moving a lot, and even venturing out of the nest once they reach the ten week old mark.

As their activities become louder, they are much more noticeable to homeowners.

All the stealth the mother squirrel used to go undetected goes right out the window.

While mom is off feeding, young squirrels entertain themselves with games of chase and what seems like bickering.  To say the least, the humans exposed to these noises in their ceilings, walls, attics, and soffits often don’t find it too cute.

Aware of this development timeline, it makes perfect sense that people are now hearing noises indicative of young squirrels: scratching, scurrying, little barks, and running.

Dealing with Nuisance Squirrels

So now that baby squirrels are becoming active and have alerted you to a squirrel problem, the question remains: What can be done about the squirrels?

That’s a good first question and a professional squirrel remover like Frontline Animal Removal can help get the squirrels out.

Removing squirrels is an important first step but other, perhaps more important, questions to consider are:

  • Where did the squirrel get into the house?
  • What sort of damage is there?
  • Is there an on-going issue with the house that needs resolved that the squirrels just pointed out?

Let’s say squirrels were heard in the ceiling of this small addition on the back of the house.

From this view it looks like there is some loose soffit and there could be a widening gap at the fascia: home problems that need addressed and were exploited by the squirrel.

Investigating further during the removal phase, you or a company like ours to take a closer look at this squirrel entry area and find this:

In the grand scheme of homeownership, this is worse than having squirrels.

The rot and water damage that’s been found by an inspection for squirrels lets us know there’s a deeper, structural issue here.

You can see the  roof and fascia need some work.  It answers the question of how the squirrel problem came to be.

Sure, the squirrels need controlled.  But, moreover, this roof edge needs some TLC. Ensuring a great repair wards off squirrels AND protects the investment you’ve made in your home.

Addressing squirrel removal alone is not the best solution for this particular house: the squirrels just bring it all to light.
