Bat Droppings : Pretty Easy to Identify
You were in your attic recently and found some droppings. You asked yourself, “Are those from a mouse, squirrel, or bat?”
Today, we share a video tip to help positively identify bat droppings and differentiate them from the droppings of mice or squirrels.
Characteristics of Bat Droppings
Bat droppings (pooh, guano) are:
- about the size of a cooked grain of rice
- dark in color
- are usually found in the same place (below a roost in the attic or an entry/exit point)
- easily disintegrate when pinched into dust-like material
- have shiny little bits of insect body in the disintegrated pooh
(This above description applies to the bats that live around us here in the Akron, Canton, Kent area of Northeast, OH. All of our bats are insect eaters- we have no fruit bats.)
The last two characteristics (disintegrate and shiny bits) are really the give-aways when trying to tell if it’s bat pooh versus mouse or squirrel pooh.
Squirrel and mice pooh do not disintegrate when pinched and do not have the shiny flakes in them. Also, mouse droppings are much smaller than the bat droppings Ryan shows in the video. Size is not the best determiner for squirrel versus bat dropping comparison, as the gray squirrels’ droppings are about the same size.
Check out Ryan as he demonstrates a bat dropping investigation.
Since we are encouraging you to touch the droppings, we are also encouraging you to use gloves and avoid breathing the dust….Please Use Gloves and Respiratory Protection.
Bat Removal for Northeast Ohio
If you’ve positively identified some bat droppings and need some help to solve your bat problem please give us a call.
There is a good chance that all that remains of the bats in your attic right now is their pooh.
If the bats aren’t hibernating in your attic, it’s a great time of year to seal up your attic so that when they stop hibernating and migrate back, they can’t get back in.
