2024 Bat Proofing Has Begun

When it comes to keeping your home free from bats, bat proofing is essential.  Now is the time to do it.

Here at Frontline Animal Removal, we take pride in offering comprehensive bat exclusion services to the residents of Stark, Summit, and Portage Counties, ensuring that your home remains safe and bat-free.

What is Bat Proofing?

Bats don’t force their way into your home like other animals might. Instead, they find small openings—often no larger than 3/8th of an inch—that have developed due to age, damage, or construction flaws. These openings lead to attics and other spaces where bats can thrive, returning year after year if the conditions are right.

The presence of bats in your home can lead to a range of issues, from the accumulation of guano and urine stains to the occasional bat finding its way into your living space. Addressing the problem promptly is key to preventing further damage.

The Bat Exclusion Process

Bat exclusion, the first step in bat proofing, involves making sure all bats are safely out of your home before sealing it up. This is done using specialized exclusion devices like bat cones or tubes, which allow bats to exit but not re-enter. These devices are usually made of slick plastic that bats cannot grip, ensuring they cannot return once they’ve left.

Once all the bats are out, the next step is to remove these devices and properly seal the home. This involves addressing every potential entry point to ensure bats cannot find another way back in. This part of the process is critical because once excluded, bats will actively search for new entry points.

Key Techniques in Bat Proofing

Screening: Necessary vents and other openings are often protected with fine mesh screens to prevent bat entry while maintaining ventilation.

Siding, Soffit, Flashing, and Fascia Repair: Bats commonly enter attics through roofing or siding elements that are old, damaged, or improperly installed. Replacing or repairing these elements is often necessary to ensure a bat-proof home.

Caulking and Sealing: Small gaps that don’t require full replacement of materials can be filled using a combination of filler material and high-quality caulk. For instance, foam backer rod is used to fill gaps, which is then covered with a specialized exterior sealant like SolarSeal #900.
