How to Trap a Groundhog
Here are some good pictures showing a groundhog trapping scenario at a recent job in Canal Fulton, OH.This first picture tells the story of where the groundhogs have made their den. This main entrance/exit at the base of the stairs is where we put the trap.
The method chosen to trap them is what is referred to as a positive set. Locating an area of travel, we place a double door trap in the path. Any other points of travel are occluded by wire, stakes, or objects of some kind. This forces the groundhog to go through the trap; it only gives them one choice for travel. This method does not rely on bait or waiting for a groundhog to be lured to a trap. Positive trapping forces a groundhog through the trap.
Effective Groundhog / Woodchuck Trapping
The picture just above shows blocking wire along the side and front of the steps. You can also see a similar set-up on the far side of the steps. Essentially, any groundhog that attempts to go under these stairs or exit from the den underneath must travel through one of the two traps in place.
As you can see, this method is effective at targeting specific, problem groundhogs and catching multiple animals from the same area.
