Timing of Attic & Chimney Raccoons Giving Birth
Have you heard noises (or seen other evidence) in the attic or chimney and suspect that raccoons may be there?
If so, it makes a lot of sense, as female raccoons here in NE Ohio are making preparations for the birth of their young. Raccoon breeding usually starts in January. Breeding continues into the spring as young females born last year typically come into heat the latest.
Raccoons have a gestation period of around 65 days. Consequently, raccoon litters are usually born beginning in March and continue till the early summer. Doing the math for a raccoon bred on January 31–she will deliver her litter about two weeks from today: April 6.
As of last week, we were already starting to see some ready-to-give-birth-soon females. This lets us know that despite the very cold winter we experienced here in NE Ohio, there was some January/early February breeding activity.
Why Do Raccoons Give Birth in Attics and Chimneys?
The pregnant female raccoon’s main task right now is to find a suitable den in which to give birth. Top concerns on her priority list for possible den sites are shelter and security. The den has to be protected from the elements and predators (mostly male raccoons).
For this reason, attics and chimneys seem like good choices for many raccoons. Uncapped chimneys, loose soffit, and any sort of hole on the roof line are calling cards to curious females on the hunt for a perfect denning spot.
A Look at March Raccoon Activity
This pregnant female raccoon was captured accessing/exiting an attic.
Here is a close-up of the area she was using to get into the attic. Notice the insulation pulled out. This is fairly typical.
Though squirrels were living in the attic and accessing this gable vent, this raccoon wanted in the attic as well and did not appreciate the squirrel trap blocking her access.
Here is a telling picture of a small space trying to be accessed by a determined raccoon that had her main way blocked. Remember, raccoons are strong, dextrous, agile, persistent, and smart.
