Cold Weather Equals Flying Squirrels
The Flying Squirrel is unique among squirrels for its habit of communal nesting, especially in the winter.
And one of the main issues of a large number of flying squirrels over-wintering in an attic is the resultant large amount of squirrel poop and urine.
Take, for instance, this home which had a large number of flying squirrels in it this winter.
Do you see all those brown streaks on the siding coming down from the soffit? As you might suspect, it is the result of a large amount of flying squirrel feces and urine.
Unlike other species of squirrels, the Southern flying squirrel has no problems residing in communal nests through the winter. Experts believe they do this for warmth and social benefits.
Right now, many of the squirrels are starting to move into attics as larger groups.
Unlucky homeowners can expect noisy nights as they move around the attic. To avoid the problems of a large number of flying squirrels, now is the time to remove them and make repairs so they can’t get back in.
Flying Squirrel Removal and Repair
Here is Ryan on a recent job showing an entry and explaining this unique behavior.
Flying squirrel management is a two step process of removing the animals living in the house and sealing it up to make sure there are no more opportunities for others to move in.
Removing the flying squirrels is accomplished by trapping them as they exit structure.
Repairing and preventative steps are accomplished by addressing problem areas.
At this particular job, the siding/trim job at the corner of the house needs redone.
Here is another, older video in which Ryan shows the signs of a large congregation of flying squirrels.
