In this video, Ryan explains the basic principle of nuisance squirrel removal—control all entrances. If squirrels have multiple ways to come and go, trapping will be inefficient. The key is to find, block, and control all access points before setting traps.
Why Controlling Entrances Matters
When squirrels are using an attic, they’re rarely entering through just one hole. They may have a primary entry hole and several secondary routes or “back doors.” These extra routes allow squirrels to avoid traps, escape, or simply continue living comfortably in your home—no matter how many traps you’ve set.
If traps are placed only at the main entry point, but the squirrels can use a hidden secondary hole, the trapping process stalls. Squirrels are intelligent, agile, and highly motivated to stay in a warm attic, especially when temperatures drop or they have young to protect.
By controlling all entry and exit routes, we eliminate those “back doors” and force the squirrels to encounter the traps. This makes the removal process not only faster but also much more reliable.
Temporary Blocks: How We Control Access
To make this strategy work, we first inspect the entire structure—roof edges, dormers, vents, soffit gaps, and any point where rooflines meet siding or brick. Once all possible access points are found, we take one of two actions at each:
- Set traps directly at a known entrance—this is where squirrels are most likely to pass through.
- Temporarily block other entrances—this funnels all squirrel traffic through the trapping points.
These temporary blocks might be made with sheet metal, wire mesh, or durable flashing materials—strong enough to hold up until the removal is complete.
After we confirm that all squirrels are gone, we remove the temporary blocks and make permanent repairs to prevent re-entry.
