It’s Time to Get The Squirrels Out

Squirrels have moved in.  They’ve chewed their way into the attic through a gable vent. They have free run of the soffit because of a damaged piece.  Or, they’ve come in through a rotted piece of roof decking or fascia.

And while there are many ways that squirrels get into houses, there is but one tried and true way to get them out and keep them out: Removal and Repair.

Is today the day you decide to evict the squirrels from your Akron/Canton/Kent area house and keep them out?  If it is, we can help.

Acceptance or Oblivion?

Squirrel chew through ventWe realize that we are more sensitive to nuisance animal issues than the average homeowner.  Makes sense, right?

We also realize it’s probably not exactly normal to be scanning roof lines, spotting potential nuisance animal issues as we drive through residential neighborhoods.

But even so, we often debate among ourselves why people let home repair and/or animal issues go unaddressed.

Do they just not realize there is a problem?  Does it not bother them that squirrels are living in the attic?  Should we switch to a door to door marketing strategy, leaving business cards scrawled with “You’ve got squirrels. Call me.”? (Don’t worry, we’re not going to do this!)

An Example of an On Going Squirrel Problem

squirrel on Akron roofFor example, here is a picture that has been a long time in coming.

Here is a gray squirrel perched on a peak of an Akron roof.  Just below it, where the soffit of the house meets the garage roof, you can see a piece of bent soffit where the squirrel enters the soffit.

I’ve seen this squirrel so many times over the past couple years driving by or walking the dog!    I’ve always told myself I should get a picture of it.  So yesterday, with the squirrel perched so well just gnawing noisily on a nut, I finally drove around the block and snapped the photo.

Which brings us back to the question:  Does the homeowner just not realize there is a squirrel living there or does the homeowner just accept it?

We realize the answer is not always black and white.   It’ obviously different for every case and a combination of many factors.  (Life is busy…perspectives differ…priorities and abilities for person A are different than person B….et cetera)

But, still, we wonder.

Don’t Ignore the Squirrel Problem

If, however, you’ve come to realize there is a squirrel problem or repair issue that could lead to squirrel problems, we offer the following advice:

  • Don’t ignore it. Squirrels don’t just go away once they’ve found a comfortable home. Denning sites are generational.
  • Keep those trees trimmed.
  • A repair prior to squirrels moving in is less expensive than squirrel removal and repair.
  • Make sure the repair is quality.  An animal removal company should be making the repair the way the same way a siding/roofing company would do it.  (You’d be very surprised at what some of the “repairs” made by trapping companies look like)
  • A repair without removal once squirrels are already there is most likely not going to be effective.  Squirrels are persistent when they’ve found a good thing.
