Monitor Squirrel Hole with Duct Tape
We were recently contacted by a homeowner to help make a repair at a squirrel hole high at the peak of a house.
These squirrels had gained access to an attic and were making a lot of noise. The homeowner had enough, went out and got some traps, and successfully caught and removed 4 squirrels from the attic.
Not hearing any squirrel noises and having had trapping success, the homeowner knows a repair is the next step.
That’s where we come in.
But, prior to making the repair, Ryan used a simple, cheap, tried & true method to make sure there were no more squirrels in the attic- good ol’ duct tape.
He simply covered the hole and planned on giving it a day or two to see what was happening. If, upon return, the duct tape were still in place and no other signs of squirrels in the attic were noticed, then a repair could be made.
Ryan didn’t want to make the mistake we’ve seen time and time again: people making repairs before the squirrel problem is solved.
If he’d have just done the repair without assuring all the squirrels were gone, his repair or another part of the house could have been damaged by a squirrel trying to get out. That’s not good for the homeowner or us.
As you can see in the video which follows, the tape was gone. The conclusion in this case is that more squirrel removal is necessary prior to the repair.
Using duct tape to monitor a hole is what we call cheap insurance!
Squirrel Removal Before Repair
What we’ve found many times is that squirrels who get shut out of (or closed up in) a home just find another way in or out and cause more damage in the process. All the troublemakers need removed prior to the repair!
Assuring removal prior to the sealing up a squirrel hole is very important.
This takes the conditioned squirrels (often a generational problem) out of the mix. It gives the repair/exclusion of the entry point a much higher likelihood of preventing a reoccupation by squirrels.
For another example of this, please see this blog post:
The tip of monitoring an animal hole with tape is not a new one either.
As Ryan said in the video, he’s talking about duct tape “again”. Follow this link to an older post for more tips relating to hole monitoring.
