Feral Cats Excluded
A homeowner called because the whole house smelled like skunk.
The house had a back porch and it was obvious a skunk had been there and needed to defend itself.
Everyone assumed that a skunk was frequenting the space under the back porch.
This scenario is pretty typical and the solution is straightforward:
- Remove the animals that are living under the porch or assure that no animals are using the space any longer.
- Attach and bury wire mesh in the ground that goes down and comes out to stop any future animals from going under.
We’ve done other posts on excluding animals from under decks, porches, and foundations. It can be found here.
Animal Exclusion with Wire Mesh
The assumption that skunks were the main problem turned out to be false! The real problem turned out to be feral cats.
Luckily, the same methods for nuisance wild animals will solve the cat problem and prevent other animal issues too.
Feral Cats Captured Instead of Skunks
Ryan found a spot at the corner of the porch where animals had dug down enough to be able to crawl under the porch.
He put a double door trap right there and blocked it in a way so that any animal going under or coming out would be captured.
He went back the next day and had an animal in the trap. But, it wasn’t a skunk. Instead, it was a feral cat.
Now, as a rule, we normally don’t deal with known feral cat jobs. People either love them or hate them and the issue often pits neighbor against neighbor. For this reason and because the nuisance wild animal control laws don’t cover feral cats, we don’t do feral cats.
But, they are sometimes caught in our live traps. When this happens they are let go unharmed. That’s what happened here.

Exclude Feral Cats | Stark, Summit, Portage Counties
Even though we don’t specifically trap and remove feral cats, you can hopefully see in the video that our wire exclusion service will take care of the problem of them living under a structure.
For this porch, no unsuspecting skunk will come along and poke its nose under this porch and find a feral cat. That means there won’t be a scuffle resulting in skunk spray.
It’s all about prevention! And, this prevention method works for skunks, woodchucks, opossums, and feral cats too!
We strongly believe that repairs and exclusions are often as important as the animal removal itself.
