Squirrel Problem Exposed by Insulation
Insulation is supposed to be in the attic, not on the ground outside of your home or in the gutter.
So, when insulation is noticed where it shouldn’t be, there is often an animal issue.
Squirrels (and raccoons to some extent) will pull insulation out of attics to make nests in soffits.
When they do this, insulation can drop out of soffits or be tracked onto roofs and then be noticed.
Sometimes there is a lot of insulation pulled out!
On a recent job, this is exactly what Ryan found.
Ryan found insulation on the ground which is a great indication of an animal problem higher up.
And, Ryan also found signs that a gutter is completely clogged.
Watch the video here as Ryan points out the connection between insulation, over-flowing gutters, and nuisance squirrels.
Sign of Squirrels
People sometimes see the insulation lying there but don’t realize it is a good indicator that a squirrel or a raccoon has gotten into the attic or a wall.
Finding insulation where it shouldn’t be should be a tip-off that nuisance animals might be somewhere they shouldn’t be.
Knowing what is going on often can only be truly assessed by getting out a ladder and getting up on the roof line.
As the video shows, getting on the ladder shows the extent to which the gutter is clogged.
Solving the Squirrel Problem
At this particular job, the needed steps for a solution are:
1) Trap and remove the squirrels
2) Unclog the gutter and soffit of insulation
3) Repair and reinforce the soffit where the squirrels were getting in
Following these steps will:
1) Get rid of the noisy squirrels getting into the attic and soffit and moving insulation all around
2) Keep the water off the roof and wall elements because long term exposure to all this water will begin to affect the underlying wood
3) Keep/prevent more squirrels from moving back in
