Raccoons Find Ways Inside
For those with a raccoon living in their structure, there is often frustration with the situation and a questioning about how this unlucky condition came to be.
Many of our clients who need raccoon removal often feel unlucky that their house was the one the raccoon picked on when it could have been any of their neighbors instead.
“Why me?” is a common and understandable reaction.
And although we see a lot of raccoon entries in the same types of spots, they still impress us from time to time with their persistence and ability to find ways inside.
Today, we share a video of an unexpected raccoon entry spot and discuss some ways to discourage raccoon entry.
A Case of Bad Luck
There are things that we humans can do to up the odds when it comes to keeping raccoons out, but we’ll get to that in a bit.
Instead we want to jump right into a video that shows a pretty serious case of bad luck when it comes to raccoons.
In the video you’ll see that even Ryan, who has seen hundreds and hundreds of raccoon entries, is still abe to be impressed by the fact that raccoons were able to get into a building at a particular spot.
Take a look:
As you saw, the raccoons finding that spot wasn’t a guarantee by any means.
Yet with enough raccoons out exploring, the way in was discovered. This was probably more a case of bad luck than anything else.
Steps to Prevent Raccoons
Sometimes raccoons just happen. There are a lot of them in our neighborhoods and many associate our homes with good shelter.
After they take care of their food needs and assuming it is not mating season, what else is there for raccoons to do but explore?
Their explorations lead them to new sources of food and shelter. When you consider all of the raccoon hours just out and about probing and exploring, raccoons finding structural weaknesses doesn’t seem so random.
The best we can do to prevent them is:
- Fix known openings sooner rather than later. A missing piece of soffit is a sure invitation to a nuisance animal.
- Make sure trash cans are not inviting
- Don’t keep cat or dog food outside
- Keep up with roof maintenance
- Make sure chimney caps are on
- Keep substantial bushes and trees away from buildings to discourage climbing on the building
