Raccoon Use of Home is Unpredictable
People often ask Ryan how many raccoons he expects to catch on a particular job. His answer is “I’m not sure.”
That answer doesn’t mean he doesn’t have a lot of experience with raccoons. In fact, it means just the opposite… It means he is experienced enough to know that raccoon use of a particular opening at a particular structure is highly variable. Predicting the numbers would just be a guessing game. Sometimes its just one…other times it is more than five. The truth is the number of raccoons is hard to predict.

Ryan discusses that topic in the following video post. Please give it a look.
Watching with the camera and keeping the traps going until activity stops are the two main methods to determine the amount of use at a particular entrance.
Raccoon Trapping & Repair
Solving a raccoon problem at a particular structure consists of 1) Trapping the raccoons currently using the structure and 2) Repairing the entry the raccoons were using.
Removal & Repair are the one-two punch needed for a true solution.
One of the biggest mistakes we see is people not making repairs after removal. People catch a raccoon or two and think the problem is gone. In the short term, this may be correct-that’s why removal is important. But if conditions led raccoons to move in once, they are likely to move in again. Make sure those repairs are made.
The second biggest mistake we see is people trying to close up an active raccoon entrance without removal.
First, if they are inside while the close-up is being performed they are going to get out somehow. That usually means more damage. Closing raccoons up in a home’s attic or soffit is just asking for trouble.
Second, if the raccoons on the outside find their usual entrance closed up our experience shows us they don’t just leave that area or structure alone. Shut-out raccoons will cause new damage forcing their way in there or at another spot. They are strong and don’t often just go away quietly.
This goes for squirrels as well and is exemplified in this post.
