There’s a Raccoon Under My Porch
“There’s an animal living under my front porch”, is a common report in the nuisance animal control business.
But, to have that animal be a raccoon and not a groundhog, skunk, or opossum is somewhat unusual.
We found the circumstances of this case interesting enough to share in this blog post.
Not the Common Animal Under the Front Porch Scenario
The common animal under the front porch call usually involves some digging. This one did not.
The common animal under the front porch call doesn’t usually involve damage caused by the animal. This one did.
And, the common animal under the front porch call usually involves an animal entry at ground level. You get the picture…this one’s just different.
So when we got to the job here’s what we found:
- the suspect animal had broken lattice to get in
- the suspect animal had busted through a screen behind the lattice
- the suspect animal had to climb a little to get in and get out
From these clues it certainly didn’t seem like a groundhog, skunk, or opossum.
The strength and dexterity to break lattice and screening material are indicative of a raccoon. Likewise, the climbing to get in and out of the entrance (although a very short climb) are indicative of a raccoon as well.
Suspecting a raccoon, Ryan put the game camera into action just to make sure it wasn’t some other animal taking advantage of some broken lattice.
Checking the camera, it was confirmed– raccoon.
We even got an action shot as the raccoon scoots up the brick and slips into the hole in the lattice.
Of particular note is that if you go back and look at the hole in the lattice again, it doesn’t seem all that big considering the size of the raccoon.
This is a good example of the flexibility of the raccoon and the size of an opening they need.
Raccoon Removal for Akron, Canton, Kent, OH
Why do you need to know what animal is going under the front porch in order to trap it?
Well, you may not need to know for sure, but it does help and simplify things.
Knowing what type of animal you are after, informs the trapper what size of trap, what type of trap, where to set the trap and what sort of bait will be effective.
Once we knew it was definitely a raccoon going under the front porch, the actual trapping was fairly straightforward. Above, is the proof.
At this time of year, it is imperative that the sex of the raccoon be determined so that we are certain there are no baby raccoons left under the porch.
