Inspecting for Nuisance Wildlife

“I heard something that sounds like an animal in the attic.  Is there a problem?”

This is a question we get a lot from homeowners who suspect they have a raccoon, squirrel, or bird problem but aren’t quite sure.

No Pipe!

The best way to find out what’s going on than to take a close look at the house and see if there are any signs of animals or ways for animals to get in.

Inspections reveal a lot!

Sometimes the problem is very obviously tied to an animal.

But, often an inspection for animls reveals problems with the construction or maintenance of the home that really need to be addressed.

Inspection Reveals Home Issues

When the suspected animal problem is not obvious to the homeowner we:

  • Ask lots of questions: This is pretty obvious but learning as much about the problem is the important first place to start.

Things we’ll ask about:

Frequency, time, general location, and quality of the noise.

Previous animal problems and efforts taken to combat them.

  • Take a look:  Again, this seems obvious, but a thorough inspection is the bread and butter of gaining nuisance animal problem knowledge.

Often, the ladder must be deployed and time must be spent on a roof trying to find trouble spots.

Often, issues with the roof, siding, gutters are found.

A great example of this is in the following video.

As you can see, there are a couple of issues here which aren’t animal issues per se.

The missing pipe and the missing pipe cap could have led to the animal noises.

But, these issues still need addressed.

“Animal Problems” are often better classified as building and building maintenance problems.
