Raccoons Tear Up Yard looking for Grubs
A raccoon or two can do a lot of damage to a lawn in one night.
Raccoon damage is easy to identify because it consists of big pieces of sod being torn loose and flipped.
Skunks often get blamed because they, too, are grubbers. But, their holes are neat circular holes–nothing as destructive as the ripping and tearing of raccoons.
Video Example of Grubbing Raccoons
Here is a recent on-the-job example where Ryan shows damage from grubbing raccoons.
There are two ways to deal with this situation.
The first way is prevention– grub control. We’re not lawn experts by any means, but we do know there are products out there to control grubs. If there were no grubs in the lawn in the video, chances are there wouldn’t have been that much damage to the sod.
The second way to deal with the current damage is to trap the raccoons that are doing the digging.
As you saw in the video, the raccoons returned the next night for another meal and found the offering in the traps too good to pass up.
This approach is a temporary fix but it limits damage in the short term.
Fixing of the lawn and getting rid of the grubs is still needed.
