Nuisance Animal Removal in Winter is Tough
March 1!
Let’s go Spring! Let’s Go Spring! Let’s Go Spring!
Think we’re looking forward to warmer weather?
Today we reflect on the winter that was and how it relates to nuisance animal removal here in Northeastern Ohio.
We do this by sharing some of the good and and some of the bad that winter offers when it comes to nuisance animal removal in a colder climate.
To be positive, let’s start with the good.
The Best part of Winter: Tracking
Snow is great for tracking.
Since this last part of winter gave us some really nice snow, we definitely used it to our advantage when it comes to tracking animals and figuring out what is going on.
Looking at tracks in the snow, we can learn about:
- the species of animal
- the time of movement
- great places to set trap
As you’ll see in the following video, familiarity with animal tracks makes reading what is going on pretty easy. At this particular job, Ryan was able to see a raccoon was recently using this structure.
He shows you how to identify raccoon tracks.
A little snow goes a long way in informing one about what is going on in terms of animal movement.
As Ryan showed, there was also a lot of rabbit activity near this house; which is no problem as rabbits don’t climb up into roofs.
The Worst Part of Winter: Ice
Even though snow can help us see what is going on, the winter weather has a negative effect on nuisance animal trapping as well.
Some of the negative effects on nuisance animal trapping are:
- Less work because of less animals out
- Dangerous conditions stopping roof work
- Iced traps and equipment
- Slip hazards
- More time spent at individual jobs because of safety precautions
- Repair challenges
In the following video, Ryan points out a few of these challenges as he goes to get some squirrels out of a trap.
What is a routine job most times of the year becomes a much more involved job just because of snow and ice.
We know a warm up is happening and are happy it is.
