Deferred Maintenance Leads to Birds & Squirrels
Today’s advice from the nuisance animal pros: Don’t delay! Do it Today!
What’s that you ask? Repairs to your home’s exterior.
Our advice: Make a solid plan to get that lingering home maintenance issue done before some nuisance animal finds it.
If a bird or a squirrel finds it before the repair, you’ll just have another issue to deal with.
Today’s blog highlights a soffit maintenance issue that wasn’t addressed before animals found it.
First, starlings moved in and made a nest. That brought bird poop and squawking baby birds.
Then, squirrels found the weakness in the home’s exterior and moved into the attic. Now there are squirrels running around the attic: double trouble.
Soffit Issue Invites Guests
Ryan recently visited a home where a part of the soffit had come loose at some point.
This isn’t an big deal to repair, but it does require 1) knowing it’s missing and 2)someone getting up on a ladder to put it back in place and tighten things up a bit.
As happens in many instances, this repair was put on the back burner.
In the meantime, however, birds and then squirrels found this nice opening and called it home.

Removal & Repair
Now that there is also a nuisance animal problem, there are two issues to correct; animals and soffit.
As baby birds are no longer present, the bird issue is pretty easy to fix. The nesting material needs removed and any desired clean-up needs performed. Putting the sofffit back in place securely will keep the bird’s from nesting in it next year.
For the squirrels, traps need set and squirrels need removed. Putting the soffit back in place without squirrel removal will only lead to damaged soffit as they chew in to get to their comfortable attic home.
Then, once they are all out, the holes need repaired and the soffit needs to be securely re-installed. The soffit re-installation is what was needed in the first place–now it’s just after a squirrel removal job as well.
