Raccoons & Squirrels in Same House
Usually when people have a nuisance animal specie move in and call us, the problem is just one species of animal.
That is not the case at this recent job which featured a home that had squirrels living in one area of the roofline and raccoons in another.
It’s bad luck that two animal species moved in at the same time. But it is good luck that Frontline Animal Removal can deal with them both.
Check out this video to see what the issue is:
Catching squirrels and raccoons at the same time from the same house doesn’t happen all that often. But, as you can clearly see, it is a possibility.
Do I Have Squirrels or Raccoons?
Often people hear an animal in the attic and wonder if it is squirrels, raccoons or something else.
They’ll call on the phone and start describing the noise and the time of day it occurred.
This is good information for us and helps us start to put together the pieces of what is in there, how it got in, and how can we make it stop.
Here are some questions to think about when you hear noise in the attic.
- Is it at night or during the day? If it is in the middle of the night, it is probably not gray or fox squirrels. Night time noise makers in the attic include raccoons, flying squirrels, and mice. If it is during the day (sunrise and sunset) then there is a good chance it is gray or fox squirrels.
- How loud is it? If it is just a little noise, like scratching, there is a good chance it is mice. All the squirrels are a little louder and often can be heard running. Raccoons are loudest when walking because they are the heaviest and are not associated with chewing sounds.
- Is it a one time occurrence or a continual thing? It’s probably prudent to wait until there is a pattern before calling a pro. Checking out an attic based on a one time occurrence is often not to the benefit of the homeowner or the animal removal pro because there is no animal.
When the answers and signs don’t quite add up, there is a possibility (as in the case in the video) that more than one species of nuisance animal may be present.
It doesn’t happen all that often. But, it is a definite possibility.
Another Mixed Bag Example
At a job a few years ago, the camera helped us figure out there were two species of animal in the troubled house.
Even more challenging, the animals were even using the same entry spot.
In that instance, the camera revealed the presence of a flying squirrel on the roof just 4 hours earlier than the raccoon poked its head head out. And yes, it is entering the attic at the raccoon’s point of entry. From these pictures, we knew we had to remove the raccoon and then flying squirrels.
Sometimes pictures are required to really understand what is happening.
Solving Squirrel and Raccoon Problems | Akron, Canton, Kent OHIO
When two or more types of animal are using the same living space, it is important to address each species specifically.
In today’s example, each side of the home presented a unique situation. But with the knowledge of what was going on, the appropriate traps could be placed. And, as you saw, squirrels and raccoons were both removed.
If these animals were going to move in to this house eventually, having them do it at the same time probably helped the homeowner in the long run.
If you have noises in the attic indicative of squirrels or raccoons, help from Frontline Animal Removal is a call away.
