Squirrels are Symptom of Bigger Problem
Nuisance animals like squirrels, raccoons, and bats are very opportunistic.
Once they find a weak spot on a home’s exterior, they are very likely to exploit it.
So if a large gap exists where a wall and a garage roof meet (as shown in this picture), it’s only a matter of time before some animal finds it and begins to explore.
Thus, when we show up to deal with the animals but find more insidious problems (like a big gap or water problems), we feel the duty to point them out. In these cases, we always emphasize the point that squirrels are often just one of the symptoms of a bigger problem.
In the video below, you’ll see that water intrusion from a construction issue is the biggest problem here.
Ryan removes a lot of squirrels in a short time! But, due to the extent of the real problem, more work needs accomplished here.
Construction Failure & Water are Biggest Problems
In the profile job this week, you’ll be able to see easily what we mean when we say that squirrels and other nuisance animals are often just a symptoms.
Take a look:
As you saw, the squirrel problem is getting handled. Yet, the fix which will restore the structure and keep future animals out is still to be determined.
Day in and day out, we find that one of the biggest weak spots nuisance animals exploit is an area of water damage.
That’s why flashing, trim, gutters and good roofing are so important to the overall health of a home.
Water & Wood & Nuisance Animals
Wood is, by far, the most common building material there is.
But, when exposed to water for extended periods of time, some types of wood start to rot.
That’s why it’s covered, caulked, and treated. It’s also why we have pitched roofs, gutters, and downspouts.
When the wood of roofs, fascia, and soffit are not protected and exposed to water year after year, the wood eventually gets weak and damaged.
In turn, these water-damaged areas on our homes’ exteriors invite opportunistic nuisance animal species to move in.
That’s why it is paramount to long-term home health and nuisance animal prevention to keep our homes’ roofing & siding elements in good shape.
Squirrels are one of the species that love to find these water weakened areas. They don’t need them to chew through, but they’ll take them if they can find them.
