How Does a Raccoon Get into an Attic?
Although every job is unique, raccoons will often get into attics at a point where two roof lines come together. This is a very typical scenario.
In the following video, Ryan shows and discusses one of these very typical places of raccoon attic entry.
A Perfect Raccoon Entry Spot
Spots on a roof like the one in the video offer the raccoon many advantages:
- The entry is barely visible. Tucked up under one roof, these spots are not visible to predators offering the raccoon a sense of security.
- Attics offer insulation. Attics are great denning spots in winter because they offer insulation. Just as insulation keeps our houses warm, raccoons like to curl up in little bed of insulation and wait for warmer weather.
- Entries are dry and mostly protected from wind and water.
- They are elevated like natural denning spots in trees. Raccoons will use cavities closer to the ground, but prefer ones with elevation.
Thanks for watching this video.
Of course, Ryan caught the raccoon the day after this video was shot in a baited live trap right outside the entry.
After raccoon removal, the most critical aspect of the job is then sealing off this typical entry spot in a way so that this will not happen again. For more on sealing off an animal entry (exclusion), see our Repair Page.
