Baby Raccoon Removal
Have you heard noises (or seen other evidence) in the attic or chimney and suspect that raccoons may be there?
If so, it makes a lot of sense, as female raccoons here in NE Ohio have been giving birth for at least a month already. As May begins, the little raccoons get noisier. The more noise they make, the likelier they are to get noticed.
Frontline Animal Removal has been removing litters of young raccoons from soffits, attics, and chimneys since late March. When removing babies, it is also important to capture the wary mother raccoons. That way the whole problem is solved.
Today’s post shares a trick for capturing mother raccoons: Using baby raccoons as “bait”.
Location of Babies Drives Raccoon Removal
Raccoons use soffits, chimney bases, and attics as birth den sites. Really any cavity-like structure a mother raccoon can manage to get into is fair game.
When they are young and not traveling in and out of the nest, the most efficient way to get the baby raccoons is to remove them by hand.
Wearing a set of gloves, the babies are not very mobile at all and aren’t a threat to the remover until they are older. They do make chittering noises and growls. In removing them by hand, you should anticipate where the mother raccoon is at.
Getting to them is often problematic. But when they are accessible, solving the problem gets easier.
If the babies can be removed by hand and the mother has not yet been captured, she should be easy to catch. Why? Because her baby raccoons are the best “bait” for her.
Ryan shows the result of using the bay raccoons to catch a mother raccoon in the following video.
Baby Raccoons as Bait
At a recent job Ryan was able to gather up the babies by hand. The mother raccoon was around but ended up taking off for the time being.
Knowing she would return, Ryan put the babies in a protective box attached to a trap. When she returned for them, she was captured in short order.
Take a look.
