When Raccoons Ignore Bait
Raccoons are intelligent and adaptable. They are also hungry and usually vulnerable to easy food opportunities that they come across.
Placing a well-baited cage trap in their travel path usually captures them. Sometimes, though, it doesn’t.
At a recent job, we were called to a residence where raccoons were wreaking havoc by infiltrating the soffit of a home.
Knowing where they were getting in, Ryan placed a nicely baited trap right there. The raccoons ignored it. In fact, the photo evidence shows they even used the trap to make the climbing simpler. Take a look.
Despite great trap placement and a well-baited baited trap, the raccoon remained elusive, seemingly uninterested in the tempting treats within.
Having deploying a game camera, Ryan was able to monitor the raccoon’s behavior. It became evident that this particular raccoon was shrewd a change of tactics was necessary.
Ryan mounted a double-door trap directly over the hole, leaving the raccoon with no choice but to confront its capture. This method, while effective and highlighted in last week’s post, requires a more hands-on approach. Often the simplest approach is tried first when the camera is employed.

Here is the video Ryan made which shows the situation and its resolution. As you’ll see, the trap mounted over the hole was effective.

Ultimately, Ryan’s efforts were rewarded as the raccoon was successfully captured, bringing relief to the homeowners and restoring peace to their property.
