Trapping Chimney Raccoons

Through the fall and winter, raccoons still use chimneys for shelter.

But, unlike in the spring when the babies are very noisy and get noticed, sometimes homeowners don’t even know that raccoons are dwelling in their chimneys.

Frontline Animal Removal has recently been helping customers out who have raccoons living in the chimney.

Take a look at this video to see a recent example.

As you saw, an uncapped chimney was once again the condition that allowed this raccoon to move in.

Cap those chimneys.  Santa will appreciate it in less than a month.

Uncapped Chimneys Attract Raccoons

In our urban/suburban environments, raccoons often use chimneys as shelters as they are cozy and safe.  Chimneys resemble tree hollows in many ways and are often warmer

Raccoon in Chimney Trap

Raccoons that find uncapped chimneys rarely pass up the opportunity to get some good shelter.

Homeowners are often alerted to the problem when they hear raccoons walking on the roof or scurrying around in the chimneys.  Poop on roofs is also a tell-tale sign of frequent raccoon use.

The Plan for Raccoon Chimney Removal:

An ideal plan for removal of a raccoon  from the chimney is:

  • show up during the day when the raccoon is in the chimney
  • place a specialized chimney trap into the top of the chimney
  • capture the raccoon the next time it leaves
  • install a chimney cap to prevent future problems

As you saw in the video above, that is what happened.  Now, once the chimney caps arrive, the chimneys will be secure for the long-term.
