At Frontline Animal Removal, we often say that every raccoon problem is really two problems: first, getting the raccoons out, and second, making sure they can’t get back in.
This week’s featured job in the Canton–Akron-Kent area is a perfect example of both—complete with a successful trapping and a secure repair. This is what providing raccoons solutions is all about for us.
The Setup: Raccoons Move In
When Ryan from Frontline Animal Removal arrived at this property, it was clear that raccoons had torn a hole right through a dormer’s side to enter the attic. They peeled back some aluminum and had a cozy little spot.
Like many raccoon intrusions, the damage was at a weak spot. Raccoons are powerful animals capable of ripping through thin materials such as aluminum soffit, fascia, or flashing when they’re determined to find shelter.
Step One: Safe and Strategic Trapping
Before any repair could be done, the first task was removing the animals. To do that effectively, Ryan set up a trap directly at the point of entry, ensuring that the raccoons’ usual travel path led them right into it. This is done so that the raccoons familiar with the spot are captured and removed.
Around that opening, he built a funnel system out of hardware cloth, giving the raccoons only one direction to go—straight into the trap. This method prevents raccoons from finding alternative exits or creating new holes, which is key to a complete removal. He combined it with some double-door, pass-through style traps from Comstock Custom Cages.
Each day, Ryan monitored the traps and checked for new signs of activity. Once no more animals were being captured and there was no evidence of continued raccoon movement, it was time for the second half of the job: repair and exclusion. In this case, three raccoons were captured.
Step Two: A Repair Built to Last
The previous repair in this area had been made using thin aluminum, which is light and easy to bend—but it’s no match for a determined raccoon. So this time, Ryan used something much tougher: a perforated steel panel, a product from “Pest Blok”.
This material offers the perfect balance of strength and ventilation. The perforations allow the area to breathe, preventing trapped moisture, while the heavy steel completely stops raccoons and other wildlife from chewing or clawing through.
After replacing the old aluminum in its proper position, Ryan secured the steel panel over the damaged area with screws along the entire perimeter.
From the ground, the finished work blends in neatly with the roofline—yet it’s reinforced enough that raccoons won’t be getting back in anytime soon.
Built Strong, Looks Clean
As Ryan notes in the accompanying video, the finished product isn’t flashy—but it’s tough. Up close, you can see the small perforations and the heavy-duty ripples in the steel, but from below, it looks just like a normal part of the roof. That’s the goal: a repair that’s strong, functional, and visually discreet.
