Design Helps Animals
Where can animals get in? What are that house’s weak points?
When looking at a home’s exterior, these are the sorts of questions that first go through the mind of a nuisance animal control professional. Seeing example after example of how animals get into homes, viewing a home’s exterior through the lens of animal entry becomes second nature. We admit, its probably a sickness.
But, we also realize that many homeowners, designers, and remodelers apparently don’t give nuisance animal entry much thought when installing exterior elements or renovating. If they did, the exteriors of homes would provide fewer opportunities for nuisance species like raccoons, bats, and squirrels to take advantage of.
Designed for Raccoons
For example, in the video below Ryan shows a soffit that was added recently to a house with no thought for nuisance animals.
At a peaked end of a home (gable), someone added a piece of horizontal soffit which gave some raccoons an awesome spot to live. If everything were flat to the house, the look that was trying to be achieved would not have been so raccoon-friendly. But, because there is an inset window, the soffit is easily accessible.
Whoever did this wasn’t thinking about nuisance animals for sure.
An example of an animal-friendly design is displayed well in the following video.
Birds, bats, or squirrels could easily have used this space as well.
Needless to say, after the raccoons are out screening or a redesign is going to be necessary to keep the soffit animal-free going forward.
