Ridge Vent Raccoon
In the past couple weeks our posts have concerned raccoons that have made a mess getting into buildings and discussed how we get them out. We have another example today.
This time the raccoon wanted into an attic so badly that the raccoon tore up a perfectly good ridge vent to get inside. That’s pretty bad luck for a homeowner.
As you can see in the picture to the right, the hole wasn’t even made at the end of the ridge vent where one might suspect an attachment weakness. This raccoon just started ripping and tearing and made its way inside.
These seemingly random acts of raccoon destruction are just one of the many frustrations nuisance raccoons provide for homeowners. But, as birthing season is just around the corner, raccoons making the final push to get get the perfect denning site is understandable.
Trapping Nuisance Raccoons at Entry
Ryan was called to a home with raccoon noises in the attic and found the torn up ridge vent.
In the following video, he shows you what he found. Also included is the removal process.
Trapping Destructive Raccoons
As you saw in the video, catching this raccoon is best accomplished by putting a trap right at the entrance/exit. Wire attached around the hole and trap controls which way the animal can move. If it wants to get out, it has to go through the trap. Or if an animal wants in through this hole, the animal has to go through the trap.
Using a trap that catches an animal as it passes through the trap rather than rely on bait is very effective. Double door traps are essential for this. Integrating a trap into a pathway at an entrance/exit is also a great way of telling if the hole is active.
Once a raccoon is captured at this time of year it is very important to examine the raccoon to see 1) if it is a female and 2) could there be babies left in the attic.
If it is a female raccoon and she has already given birth, the babies will need to be located and removed by hand. There were no babies present yet at this job from the first week of April.
