Today’s post is a great example of our focus of providing Canton, Akron, and Kent area residents with lasting solutions to their nuisance wildlife problems; in this case it is a raccoon problem.
The picture to the right shows one homeowner’s recent problem.
This roof had some water damage and the decking became weak in this spot. Somehow, a raccoon found this weakness and exploited it.
Raccoons are stron. They rip and pull really well. As you can see, the raccoon was able to pull up shingles and roof decking that had been weakened. It made a really nice hole for itself to slip inside this house.
The raccoon could be heard and the bigger hole let more water in. This is a problem that needs a solution.
Remove Raccoon By Trapping
The first step to solve this problem is dealing with the raccoon problem.
We don’t want to seal them up in the roof and we don’t want them tearing into a newly repaired area (or at another place in the roof). Therefore, trapping the offenders is the first step.
The raccoon in the cage to the right was captured as it exited the structure.
In this instance it was only one raccoon. But, that was only proven with trapping.
The trap is directly at the hole and the only way out of or into this roof hole is to go through our trap.
Often, the animals living in the structure can be captured quickly if they are currently utilizing the space.
Repair the Damaged Roof Area
After the raccoon is removed a repair needs made to keep animals and the elements out. In this instance the water damaged decking and shingles needed to be replaced.
The pictures below show 1) this area of the roof with the shingles and decking removed 2) the new decking in place 3) new shingles in place.
