Raccoon in Attic : Multiple Breakdowns

Time and time again, we witness animals getting into homes and businesses at spots where there is opportunity.  These opportune entry spots usually exist because of damage or design.

During a nuisance animal inspection for raccoons, Ryan found a spot where raccoons were accessing a garage.  From the garage, the raccoons were then getting into the attic.  Looking at the whole situation (watch the video) you can see that a few things went wrong which gave the raccoons a lot of opportunity.

Bad design, damaged drywall and no cover on the attic scuttle are all to blame for the raccoons being in this attic.

No Blocking Leads to Raccoons

In the following video, Ryan shows where some sneaky raccoons found some gaps where an awning attached to the back of the garage.

Whoever built it like this probably never considered raccoons taking advantage of the spot.

The solution here is to 1) Remove the offending raccoons and 2) make it so raccoons can’t get into the back of the garage.

Moreover, the drywall should be repaired and the scuttle closed up.  Both those hinge on raccoon removal.

Another Example of a design Flaw

Want another example?  Great.

A second example from earlier this year was found at a roof-to-roof transition.

The space created when these roofs were constructed created a tunnel that provide a nice protected space which allows raccoons to go exploring.

Whoever decided to design and construct what we saw in the video obviously wasn’t thinking about raccoons or other nuisance animals.

But to us, it’s pretty obvious that some sort of animal is eventually going to start going in and out of there.  There are some in the construction industry who do not consider how animals will react to or take advantage of what has been created.  We guess that keeps us in business.

The fix Ryan provided here is just like the other raccoon job:  1) remove the current offenders and 2) make repairs so the area can no longer be used by animals.

The “raccoon tunnel” at this building no longer exists.

Removal. Exclusion. Solution.

When nuisance animals get into homes, it is important to remove the offenders AND make a quality, thoughtful repair.

When an animal points out the weakness in a home’s design, take the opportunity to address this design element so the problem doesn’t happen again.
