More Raccoons

Last week’s blog post was about chimney chase raccoons.   If you missed it, feel free to go back and learn about why raccoons love wood framed chimneys.

One of the videos in that post shows a raccoon Ryan caught by the base of a chimney.

It seemed like a fairly easy job.

A trap was set on the ground and a raccoon was captured.

Then Ryan used some plywood pieces to block off the bottom of the chimney and form a temporary patch.

The chimney needed permanent repairs, but it was assumed the raccoon problem was taken care of.

Here’s that video:

But, THERE WERE MORE RACCOONS

Other Raccoons Shy From Trap

It turned out that other raccoons in addition to this one were aware of the chimney & soffit weakness.  They apparently liked this spot.

So even though Ryan put an effective temporary patch on the chimney base, other raccoons found a way around it.

They started climbing up the corner of the chimney on its exterior.  Then once at soffit level, they were able to force their way in.

The next order of business was to capture the other raccoons that liked this space.  That was more easily said than done.

Ryan started out by placing baited traps on the ground.  But, the wary raccoons could not be tempted.

A camera was set-up to monotor the trap and it showed the raccoons walking by the trap time after time.

This resulted in a change of trapping tactics.

The trapped was moved up to soffit and set up so a raccoon inside would have no way out but to climb into the trap.

This is a lot more work than putting a trap on the ground, but it paid off quickly.

Another raccoon was captured but a third did more damage and circumvented the new set-up.  Again, Ryan adjusted to catch this third one as well.
