Squirrels Chew Into Attic

A customer heard squirrel noises in the attic and called us to investigate.

On the roof, Ryan found that the end of a ridge vent was open providing an easy way to get intot he attic.

He set a trap guarding its exit and put other traps around that one to catch outside. The squirrel would be captured soon.

The squirrel is trapped in the video below.

Squirrels & Ridge Vents

A ridge vent is installed over a gap in the roofing at the top part of a roof.  It allows air in an attic to circulate.

But, the opening can let squirrels in if the blocking somehow fails.

That is what happened at the home in the video below.  The squirrel was able to get in through the end of the ridge vent.

As the video below shows, when squirrels find a weakness on a home’s exterior they’ll exploit it.

Plan for Squirrel Removal

In that video, you saw the two basic types of squirrel traps:

  • One-way door traps
  • Baited box traps

The one-way door trap was the trap that caught the squirrels exiting.  It was placed in conjunction with hardware cloth to direct any exiting squirrels into the trap.

The box traps are placed around the exit/entrance to catch squirrels that are not inside when the one-way door trap and blocking material is put in place.  Squirrels that come to this specific spot of entry can’t easily get inside but can have a tasty snack if they go into the trap.

The traps stay put until they are not catching anything and signs of squirrels in this area are gone. Then repairs can be made.
