Raccoons Through the Roof Edge

Roofing components don’t last forever.  Here in Northeast Ohio, raccoons and squirrels love to point this out.

Raccoon damage to RoofOne of the most frequent point of entries for nuisance animals into attic spaces is through an area of the roof that has been damaged by water over the years.

As the hole to the right shows, raccoons often access our clients’ attics and walls by climbing through holes at the roof edge.

In almost all instances, the raccoons merely exploit a weakness they find on a roof.

In this case, the fascia was damaged and rotted by water damage.  Raccoons found the damaged area and proceeded to rip off shingles and wood and make the entry more suitable for them.

And where do roof weaknesses come from?  A combination of water, old age, or improper installation.

In today’s post Ryan shows a video example of a raccoon that found a roof weakness and moved in.

Our job is to remove the raccoon that is now causing damage in the attic and making the already present water problem worse.

Raccoon Problem & Solution

With raccoons getting into the attic via the hole in the roof, Ryan was called to

  • Get the trouble makers out of the equation
  • Advise on a repair

Both of these points are addressed in the video below.

Capturing the troublemaking raccoons is achieved by placing a trap on the hole that catches them moving in or out.  This is a very specific and efficient method which targets the raccoons that are aware of and using this hole.

Once the raccoons are removed, repair of the damaged area must be addressed.

At minimum, the fascia needs replaced and the roof edge (drip edge and shingles) needs repaired.  Then the gutter needs reinstalled to keep the area dry.

But, as noted in the video, this whole roof needs replaced.  Because of that,  some temporary patching until that is done is all that was requested of us in this case.

Roof Trouble Precedes Raccoon

Roof maintenance is extremely important!

No, we are not a roofing company but we could sure do some advertising for the roofing industry.

When it comes to raccoons and roofs there almost always exists some sort of roof problem prior to the raccoons becoming a problem.

The usual culprit is water damage, often at the roof edges where decking or fascia has rotted.  But, it takes the raccoons to expose these insidious water issues.

The raccoons come along, find the weakness, and make the problem worse.  The roof maintenance issue is now compounded by the presence of the raccoon.
