Raccoons Entering Attic Here
How are the raccoons getting into the attic?
In today’s post, Ryan shows a raccoon entry into the attic through a rusted out chimney top. It is a good example of:
- The need for roof maintenance over the years
- The ability of raccoons to point out and exploit roof weaknesses
Let’s begin with a video where Ryan explains.
Raccoons Exploit Roof Weakness
The exterior of our homes take a beating.
That is why regular, on-going maintenance is required to keep water and animals out on a long term basis.
But let’s face it, out-of-sight is out-of-mind for many of us. And since we are not usually looking at our roofs, we generally assume all is well. Until it isn’t.
So when customers hear a suspected raccoon walking around their attic, that is when we get called.
Then Ryan gets on a roof and looks around at the structure. So many times, he finds out that raccoons are getting in because there was a problem with some element of the home’s exterior. The raccoons point it out and we let the homeowners know what the big picture is.
In the video above, that rusty steel chimney top led to the raccoons getting inside. It could have been like that for years with no raccoon problems. But, eventually one found the weakness. That’s all it takes.
Here are some more looks at what was found.
The deconstruction shows the issue with rust.
Ryan’s hand shows the gap the raccoons are using on the side of the pipe. It leads right down into the attic.
Once through the top, it is easy to see all the space and appeal for raccoons. Additionally, because of the way the plywood decking was cut, there is easy access into the attic.
Builders generally don’t consider nuisance animals and material failure in initial construction.
Example 2: A Horrible Roof
Finally, here is an obvious example of a dilapidated, band-aided roof that just needs replaced.
Raccoons may be a problem here but they are only the symptom of the real problem–the roof. Roofs and other parts of our home’s exteriors just aren’t meant to last forever.
Raccoons point this fact out over and over again.
