Try Simple for Raccoons
Do you have a raccoon problem?
If so, you may be wondering if this is a job you can tackle yourself.
If you’ve ever asked yourself,
“Can I do this? Or do I need to hire a professional?”
This post could be a good read.
Raccoon Problems Differ
All raccoon problems are not created equal.
Some, like a mother raccoon with babies in wall of your house probably require a professional.
But, if you have raccoons raiding the garbage regularly and want them gone, this is something many people can do on their own.
And if you decide to try to solve the raccoon problem on your own, we encourage you to start simple and go from there.
For example, if you are looking to get rid of garbage raiding raccoons, the simplest way to solve this problem is to see if you can make your garbage system more secure.
Better fitting lids might be that simple thing which helps resolve the conflict. Or, rather than throw chicken scraps in the can and let them heat up for a few days before garbage is picked up, you could always freeze the things that will really stink and throw them in the can the night before or day of pick-up.
Looking for simple solutions regularly can make an animal “problem” tolerable.
As an example, here is a video in which Ryan opted for the simpler simpler solution of habitat modification than trapping and stopping raccoons that were living in a soffit.
The point here is that not all raccoon solutions are about trapping.
True, we trap and remove animals at most raccoon jobs as a start. But, here is a case where it made the most sense to not trap the raccoons.
Because the roof needs repaired and it can’t be done right now, the best solution was to remove the habitat-providing soffit.
With the soffit gone, these raccoons will have no home. They won’t just hang out on the roof.
This approach hinges on the fact that there are no other opening for them nearby and they haven’t been inside the attic.
The raccoons will leave on their own and the homeowner can then do what is necessary for this roof and home exterior at a later date.
Maybe you don’t consider removing the soffit simple, but if you can reach it safely this job is not too bad.
Simple Trap Placement Tips
Let’s say, however, that the raccoons are getting in the house somehow and need removed. This will require trapping the offending raccoons.
Our tip for this is, it doesn’t have to be too hard.
A box trap baited with some marshmallows has fooled many a raccoon. It could easily work for you.
Just remember to place the trap close to the path of travel. Figure out where they are going and put the trap nearby.
Here is a video where Ryan gives an example of how to simply locate raccoon traps.
Placing raccoon traps on the ground by an entry or climbing spot is not too difficult.
