Squirrel Appreciation Day
This Friday, January 21, 2022, is a special day.
Besides being Museum Selfie Day, National Banana Bread Day (Yum!), and National Hugging Day, it just also happens to be National Squirrel Appreciation Day. And for that, we celebrate.
Sure we deal with a lot of “nuisance” squirrels and us celebrating them might come off to some people as insincere. But who better to appreciate them than a company that deals with them day in and day out?
For this weeks post, we thought we’d give some appreciation.
National Squirrel Appreciation Day
To answer all your questions about National Squirrel Appreciation Day we recommend going to the web site National Today and checking out the:
National Squirrel Appreciation Page
On that page you’ll find read that wildlife rehabilitator Christy Hargrove founded the day in 2001 as a way to learn about and celebrate squirrels.
The page shares a little history and timeline of squirrels in cities. It also has some facts related to squirrels. The most amazing to us is that there are over 200 different species of squirrels.
For us we deal with:
The Gray Squirrel
The Fox Squirrel
The Black Squirrel
(Color Variant of Gray)
The Southern Flying Squirrel
The Red Squirrel
Of these, gray squirrels are the most commonly found in houses.
The cutest, most interesting, and trickiest to remove from a home, however, is the flying squirrel. We definitely have an appreciation for them!
Solving Human/Squirrel Conflict
In a perfect world, squirrels would stay out of peoples’ homes and be appreciated more.
But, we are called when there is conflict between humans and squirrels. We attempt to provide win/win outcomes when possible. But in the end, our job is get squirrels out of peoples’ homes. In this respect, the squirrels don’t win.
That is why we highlight prevention and habit construction.
Keeping the outside of homes maintained by addressing old or damaged areas keeps squirrels out: very often they exploit weaknesses.
Keep trees trimmed back away from the house: they more time they spend on your roof, the more likely they are to find a weakness.

We can help get the squirrels out and provide a solution to keep others out.
It’s a lot easier to appreciate squirrels when they aren’t running around the attic or walls.
