Squirrel Chews Many Holes

Last week we profiled some of the damage squirrels can do. This week, predictably, there’s more.

We say “predictably” because the chewing damage noticed by homeowners here in the Canton, Akron, Kent area is consistent and ongoing: squirrels just love to chew!

Often, much of the squirrel chewing is utilitarian: they are chewing to get somewhere.

For example, a squirrel might find a gap at the gutter/fascia/roof interface and chew a way in to have access to the attic.

The picture to the right here shows an example of this.

This chewing to get into a home is understandable to us.  They need good nest sights and often find our homes make great accommodations compared to the neighborhood’s trees.

But, one thing we don’t understand is when it seems like squirrels just chew for the sport.

Today, that is our spin on squirrel chewing: non-utilitarian squirrel chewing done, seemingly, just because it’s what squirrels do.

Squirrels Chewing for Sport

This topic came up as Ryan recently went to a job where there were multiple squirrel-made holes which weren’t entrances or exits.

He explains in this video:

Why did the squirrel make these holes?  Honestly, we’re not sure if there was a purpose or not.  Maybe the squirrel wanted skylights or more ventilation.  Hard to say.

Squirrel Removal & Repair

While we may be able to explain all squirrel chewing, we are able to solve squirrel problems for many homeowners who contact us.

In fact, we are often called to inspect a residence when homeowners have found chewing and suspect they have squirrels in their attics or walls.

In order to provide a squirrel solution we have to

  1. Figure out what’s going on
  2. Remove the offending squirrels living in the home
  3. Repair the squirrel damage for prevention and looks

A squirrel control inspection involves looking for signs of squirrels; specifically trying to identify

  • Where they enter/exit the home
  • What kinds of damage the squirrels have done
  • How the damage can be repaired after squirrel removal
  • Prevention steps to be taken (like tree trimming)

Once these important steps have been taken, a comprehensive plan for the removal of squirrels and prevention of future problems can be put in place.
