Squirrel Chews Electric Service Wires
About a month ago, we posted a blog entitled Squirrel vs. Aluminum in which we discussed and showed the damage a squirrel can do to aluminum building components.
In that particular instance, a squirrel had chewed through an aluminum vent and was living in an attic space. The point we hopefully made is that the chewing power of squirrels should not be underestimated.
This week we present another example a metal chewing squirrel. This one, however, is even more of a problem because the chewing damaged the home’s electrical service lines. This is a potential danger as the lines have lost their designed support and the integrity of the neutral wire. Ryan shows the problem and discusses it in this short video.
Nuisance Squirrel Chewing | Removal
As you can see, this squirrel has elevated its game from a typical nuisance to a danger.
What’s most annoying about this situation, besides the repair costs, is that the squirrel seemed to be chewing just to chew. Chewing through that wire did not gain any advantage for the squirrel other than give its teeth a sharpening. Numerous times we’ve found places where squirrels have chewed on soft metals seemingly just for sport.
A few feet away from the damaged electrical line, more typical squirrel chewing (chewing with an actual purpose) was found. It is shown in the following video.
We call this purposeful chewing because the squirrel chewed into the building here in order to make a nest.
The squirrel chewed into the decorative box that was initially hollow. It then chewed its way into the soffit of the home. And, finally, it was able to access the attic and bring lots of insulation into this box. A cozy nest was created.
Had it not chewed through the electrical wire, the removal of the offending squirrel and the patch of the box would have been pretty straightforward.
But, since the service wire was damaged, electricians and/or Ohio Edison need to be involved now.
