The brick won.
Brick is a great material to keep squirrels out of a house. It is one material squirrels won’t chew through.
The flip side of the coin is that it is also a great material to keep squirrels in a house!
Squirrels Trapped in Attic by Brick Job
We had an interesting job recently where homeowners had squirrels accessing an attic through a wooden and screened gable vent in a brick house. (Remember, that a gable is where the two sides of a roof form a peak.)
The homeowner chose to remove the gable vents and put brick in their place. So a mason was hired and the job came out looking very nice.
No squirrels will be able to get through brick. Mission accomplished, right?
It seemed so at first, but the squirrel noises from the attic persisted. It turned out that baby squirrels were trapped in the attic. The brick was doing its job…just from the wrong direction.

Remember Animal Removal Prior to Repairs
As the video shows, the squirrels were able to come out once a new hole was made for the young squirrels.
Now, after removal, the house can be buttoned up and squirrel free.
This case illustrates a point we made in a very recent blog post called Repair Alone is Not the Answer.
That point being: Removal and Repair go hand in hand. One without the other is tempting and often suggested. Here is just another case when removal was necessary in conjunction with repair.
