Improved Squirrel Trapping
Think about this phrase: “Because We Always Do It That Way”
How does that phrase strike you?
If you’re like us, the phrase is a little unsettling.
It’s unsettling because we all like consistency and most of us feel like we are doing things the “right” way. But, on the other hand, the phrase also seems to shut out innovation and the on-going learning that helps people (and service professionals) get better at what they do.
As a nuisance animal removal company, we’d have you believe that we are good at what we do. (We are!) But, we also want you to know that we are always seeking the proverbial “better mousetrap”. If there are more effective, more efficient practices which benefit our customers, we want to be in on them and incorporate them into our standard practices.
Today’s post shows Ryan deviating from “the way we always do it” to try an innovative squirrel set-up.
Squirrel Trapping Innovation
For review, please refer to this older blog post where a typical squirrel trapping scenario is described.
In that post we describe 1) a way to catch squirrels coming out of a structure by blocking off the entry and 2) a way to catch squirrels already on the outside when the blocking material is put in place.
The method described in this post is effective, yet we are still innovating.
The most recent innovation Ryan is working on can be seen in the picture to the right and the video below. It deals with a more efficient way to catch the squirrels that are NOT inside the structure when the hole-covering trap is placed in service.
Ideally, all the squirrels that use a particular home or structure would be inside a structure when the hole-covering trap is placed. But, due to practical issues, we can’t set up all of our gray squirrel jobs before squirrels come out at dawn or after they retire for the evening.
These outside squirrels can sometimes be a little tricky, especially if attempts to trap them have already been made. Therefore, Ryan’s been trying a new technique where he adds a way one door to let the squirrels into the nest and trap complex they typically wouldn’t be able to get by. Upon entering the hole via the one-way door opening inward, the next time the squirrel wants to leave it can only go in the trap.
This may allow the squirrels to spend one more night in a structure, but it actually reduces the number of traps placed and helps reduce the instances of squirrels avoiding the baited traps left for those shut out of the nest.
It is a work in progress, but so far results are positive.
